What is PMI?

The PMI – Project Management Institute – is an international organization founded in the United States for the purpose of consolidating and institutionalizing project management standards, as well as transforming the project management profession into a major pillar in the enhancement of business results for organizations in carrying out such projects.

The PMI is a nonprofit organization and was established in 1969 by NASA veterans in the United States. For years, PMI was involved in formulating the knowledge required of each project manager in various disciplines.

To date, the PMI has published six editions of the PMBOK® guide. Project management certification exams are based on the standards that appear in this guide and the project management standard was recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 2000.

The organization currently has a membership of nearly one million project managers from all over the world. To date more than 800,000 of them have passed the PMP® – Project Management Professional certification exam. In addition, the organization has 274 branches and sub-branches in 100 countries across the globe. It holds seminars, lectures, training sessions and workshops and publishes updated editions of the PMBOK® Guide from time to time.

The organization aims to professionalize the project management world, both by spreading knowledge and by certifying project managers from all over the world. These qualifications are intended to raise the bar of the profession and define experts in the field, similar to the certification exams in the professions of law, accounting and more. They set the professional standards required of project managers and PMO personnel.

Certified project managers receive higher salaries and are in high demand for senior positions in their field. Today there is a very clear tendency to favor project managers with PMP® certification from the PMI.
